The first week....on the way to the Black Sea

We started biking on Thursday the 8th of June. Why?....because we were kind of ready...not because the weather forecast was that great...there was still some rain expected....
We left around noon and took bike paths to Nijmegen, where we could pick up our trail, the Limes Route. I have the booklet with the maps and description on my handlebar bag, Jan has a brand new GPS gadget with the whole route on it. So this was the moment of truth....would it work, like we were told? Jan pressed some buttons and !hurray! There is was...the purple line on the map, which was going to guide us all the way to our destination! Jan was so happy! The amazing invention works perfectly and has already improved our time on the bikes. No more reading, turn left, turn right every 100 meters or so, just one look shows where you have to go. It is so easy.
Also about 3-5km before a campground, we put the address in and it just guides us. Wonderful. It even knows where the next supermarket or bakery is etc!!!
Needless to say that we arrived easily at our chosen campground.
By now, on our 4th bike-tour, things have become pretty standard. Jan puts up the tent, I do the beds and the interior decorating, meaning putting all our stuff inside. Then We have some wine and nibbles...Jan cooks the dinner, we eat, do dishes and slowly get ready for bed. Oh,...somewhere in between that we have showers too. It's very straightforward.
We slept well.
The next morning after breakfast it started to rain; we decided to wait it out and went back to sleep....it was 14.30 when we could finally leave...
We biked from Millingen to Xanten, where we camped behind a kind of restaurant where a motor club had a gathering and a party. The next morning, someone asked if we had heard the music, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, Beatles etc etc very loud...but no....we didn't hear it...we slept right through it haha!
The next 3 days we followed the river Rhine, as much as possible along the shores on bikepaths. Actually we almost always have designated bike paths, which makes it very safe biking. But because we went through the "Ruhrgebiet", which is the very heavily industrialized area of Germany, we sometimes had to pass urban areas as well. The landscape looked similar to Holland, the industries were downright ugly, and I wasn't too sure about liking this place....To make matters worse...my beloved French bread has been replaced by some very serious heavy brown bread.... Thank goodness they still sell wine here. And I worked out a "stay-happy-plan: we will go out for dinner every Sunday night, since the supermarkets are closed on that day anyway. So on that first Sunday we found a wonderful Thai restaurant and ate our hearts out...it was great!! Food tastes so so good after all that exercise!!
We did 75, 75 and 100 kms till we arrived in Koblenz. The campgrounds went up in price, the further we went along the Rhine...last night cost us €24,-! But fortunately, the tide has turned today: only €12,-... Maybe because the ladies loo is under repair and now located in a temporary little building..:-(
Anyway, a fellow biker had suggested to us to take a boat ride on the Rhine, so that's what we did. The easiest 65 km ever, sitting in the sun enjoying the views and taking pictures of old castles and Fachwerk houses and churches. So now we are in Bingen.
Our legs are getting strong again. The terrain is mostly flat and the landscape has started to look like a holiday place again, green hills cut by a fast flowing river, blue skies and sunshine :-)). It hasn't rained anymore at all. We had one day against the wind but the 100km day we had the wind in the back.....it makes all the difference. So, we are enjoying our time!
En voor degenen die liever nederlands horen:
We zijn nu 6 dagen onderweg en we beginnen erin te komen.
Na 'n halve dag regen op de tweede dag, hebben we constant prachtig weer, zelfs een dag de wind in de rug en dat scheelt, 100 km die dag. ( die andere dagen deden we zo'n 75/dag)
We volgen, sinds de Duitse grens, de Rijn en dat voornamelijk op fietspaden en vlak terrein.
De industrieën in het Roergebied waren heftig en stinkend naar gassen soms maar we zijn er voorbij. Vandaag zelfs de hele dag op 'n rijnboot vol toeristen, 65 km lang, dus dat trekken we af van de 4000 die gepland hadden.
In Bingen nu en morgen zullen we Frankfurt wel passeren.
Dit is het eerste jaar dat we op een fiets GPS rijden en wat een genot!
We volgen nu een paars lijntje dat helemaal tot aan de zwarte zee loopt....
En de Lidl en plaatselijke camping kunnen we gewoon fiets-tomtommen.
Nee, zo komen we er wel!
Oh ja, voor die het nog niet wisten: we volgen de Limes route, en dat was de noordelijk grens van het Romeinse rijk, 'n tijdje geleden dus. Deze grens werd vnl bepaald door de grote rivieren in midden Europa. Die volgen we dus met handige bijkomstigheid dat langs rivieren fietsen meestal vlak terrein is...tot aan Roemenië, maar daarvoor moeten de pedalen nog vaak rond.

He.....heerlijke avonturiers....jullie verslag met wsrme belangstelling gelezen!...Ik bewonder jullie en houd van jullie. Ben ook een heel klein beetje jaloers op het intense leven dat jullie leiden. Jullie plukken elke dag en doen er wat moois mee. Ga lekker zo door en ik kijk uit naar jullie volgen verslag. The boat to Bingen is a really famous part of the Rhine, sounds like you enjoyed that.
I suppose you'll turn left soon to get to the sourse of the Danube.
Have you seen any of the old Roman border posts yet?
I am in the middle of renovating the kitchen here, repainting and installing new Ikea cupboard s
All going well but the last 2 days suddenly very weak, I can only get up for 1/2 he before I need to lie down to recover.
Oh well if it's not better tomorrow I'll visit the Dr.

Wat leuk om weer mee te reizen, samen met de anderen familie en vrienden die reakties sturen. Het klinkt als een mooi rustig begin, behalve die eene dag met regen dan. Geniet ervan, de rust, en de vrijheid. Wij genieten hier ook van jullie mooie huis in Puhoi. Nog 3-4 weken werken, en dan 7 weken tot we ons nieuwe kereltje mogen ontmoeten.

Hi broer en zusje, fijn te horen dat jullie weer fijn aan het fietsen zijn, hopenlijk met beter weer dan vanuit Spanje! Genoten van jullie eerste nieuwsbrief.ik zit al bijna 2 weken alleen thuis in Spanje, maar vermaak me prima. Het is bloedheet momenteel. vanmorgen om 11 uur was het al 35"C in de schaduw van de patio. Te heet om in de tuin te werken. Ben binnen aan het poetsen, want as. Dinsdag krijgen we bridgevrienden over voor n week. Ik duik dadelijk maar even in het zwembad, want t water loopt van me af. Ik wens jullie veel fietsbelevenissen en mooie vergezichten toe.. -

Nou ja we hebben jullie de eerste week gevolgd wat het weer betreft. Wasmachine niet zo slecht hé?
Verder lukt het fietsen weer aardig?
Hier alles oké en zijn gangetje. Pensionering is toch best last na een werkzaam leven.
Ik wil toch een zinvol doel?
Vandaag lekker opgepast op 2 heerlijke kinderen.

It's Saterday ( 18th?) and we are in Rothenburg an der Tauber. Not a good internet connection....but we are fine and biking happily trough Germany....
Hope your are getting better soon Kerry, keep us updated please!
Great that we have also contact with Pam now and don't worry: we are treating ourselves very well, mostly with biking and wine!
Great to have Joe at the party as well. ( Joe is the Aussie from last year in Spain; we biked 700 km together in wet condition from Sevilla towards Leon)
Willemijn mist je geloof ik; goeie reis terug naar Spanje.
Vliegen kan ook Inge maar dat hopen we dan maar op de terugweg te doen.
We hebben prachtig fietsweer, Nicolette en echt 'n makkie vergeleken met vorig jaar Els.
En dan ons Janneke....nog maar 10 weken!

Hi Jan and Marleen, your English is excellent Marleen ! Well at least now I can follow your adventures without all the hard work of biking it.
We have had a week of the hottest weather this year in Den Bosch (32 degrees !) but today the wind has blown in and hopefully a storm which will bring the temperature down again. Thank heaven, its no fun sleeping on the top floor in this heat !

Hi Jane en Marleen.
Zo jullie hebben alweer heel wat kilometer gemaakt zeg! Het is weer een prachtig reisverslag. Wat een weertje zeg, hoop dat jullie nog veel de wind in de rug hebben lijkt mij wel relaxed, hier in west friesland waait het veel en hard, dus een duwtje in de rug is mooi meegenomen. Wij gaan jullie reis vervolgen in Zuid Spanje waar we zaterdag heen vliegen haha! Vorig jaar nog die speciaal ontmoeting in Noord Spanje wat was dat leuk en apart. Nu lieve vrienden heel veel fiets plezier en liefs van ons geniet van alle mooie dingen en schrijf het op zodat wij mee kunnen genieten. Doe voorzichtig knuffel!
