On 21-8 we spent the day in Basel, just a crossing of 2 bridges away. The first bridge was from France into Germany, the second one from Germany into Switzerland.
But before we left our campsite we did a machine load of washing and finished writing our last blog...
In Basel we went to the public library, to print a form we needed to send to Hein, in NZ. That all went fine, but then we needed a notary, to verify Jan's signature...we managed to find the city public services building and a notary...next step done. Then we were shown where the university library was and there we helped by a very kind lady, who scanned the document and sent it to Hein! Mission accomplished! In one of these libraries we also managed to send the blog. A very fruitful day. On the way back in the German part of our trip we visited a humungous Kaufhaus where we bought wonderful steak and spinach for our dinner...power food! It tasted yum, as always!
Oh yes, and we had to say goodbye to the nice Dutch family with their 2 teenage kids. They ended their bike trip in Basel and we're going back by train. They did so so well!
22-8, as soon as we enter Switzerland, I get the feeling that we are supposed to be some sort of mountain goat :-/.... Suddenly there can be a steep surprise around a corner, just like that, without any warning.... It seems to be normal here...
But for an average Dutch girl like me, these surprises are a bit much (steep) and until I am used to it I have to jump of my bike every now and again..
So this is how it started. These are not the mountains yet, just curvy landscape.
I like seeing the pretty houses and churches, we see cows with bells around their necks, we see green meadows and many apple trees heavily laden with apples. We are in a valley formed by the Rhein. When our track goes near the river we see people swimming in it. It is a wonderful sight. It is another hot day and we are glad to arrive at our campground around 5pm after 75 km. In Germany that was, just across the river Rhein. It is a very classy, well organized camp, where they have drawn squares on the ground with chalk. We can choose our own square :-)), after we celebrated our arrival with a glass of beer on their terrace.
23-8. Heins 32 birthday today!
We left at around 9 and I reminded Jan that we should have another look at my handlebar, before we got into the big mountains...so we were looking out for some sort of hardware shop. But there were not too many of those around on our route. Then Jan saw a workshop (Citroen) and we stopped. The man who worked there, by himself, was willing to try and fix it. He first did what Jan suggested, which was to insert some washers on either side of the steering head (inside) but that did not improve the steering function. It still wobbled up and down and sideways as well. Then both men agreed on a different tactic...tiny strips of copper were inserted. This resulted in the fact that they could not push the handlebar back into place anymore. Then I suggested they would stuff some rubber into a different gap. It took some force after that to replace the handlebar into position but then, when all the screws were back in and fastened....low and behold...the handlebar didn't move any more!!! Wobble gone!! Stable as a poke!! (If that makes sense...). It took many drops of sweat, many frowned eyebrows, lots of patience and persistence....but Niki for Switzerland solved the problem! For free as well, because he refused money. To him to overcome the challenge, was the reward. So nice!! I am so happy with my better bike!!!
It took 1 and a half hour!
We went on our merry way, again hilly country, I don't like it too much but we can and have to do it. We are very lucky, I think, to ride in valleys of rivers. Paul Benjaminse, the writer of our book and track finder , sure knows how to find quiet, bike friendly roads, least traffic, least ups and downs...but even he can't escape the landscape ;-)
We find our campsite in Frauenfeld, a strange little place where a big group of Spanish athletes reside. They were very noisy, but I don't mind that, I quite like the chitter chatter in exciting different languages...
We hurried to get the tent up before it rained and succeeded. We ate red cabbage and fish and rice and drank wine...the great rewards after the exertion! So enjoyable!
24-8 we hear rain in the night, we wake up to a very cloudy sky and the threat of rain. We get dressed, eat, pack and it rains...
We wait a little, but when the sky brightens up a bit, we leave. The valley seems to have widened here, we follow the Thur now. We bike in between big fields often, we pass lots of huge farms, we smell the foul smell of fertilizer, but the biking gets easier and easier...it gets flatter as we approach the Bodensee. I love this fast downhill ride!!
We go fast, wind in the back and sometimes even go 28km per hour on a flat bit!
But then the weather changes, it starts to rain. We seek shelter. Heavy rain pours down! It stops. We carry on and reach Rohrschag on the lake and we stop for a drink on the boulevard. People walk and skate past leisurely, it's nice.
But after that the weather deteriorates again. We reach the campground while it rains...we ask for a caravan, or room, but they have none. So we eat our dinner under a little roof while we wait for a stop in the rain, to put up our tent. Jan had bought a ready cooked chicken and a salad!
When the tent is up, it rains again. Everything feels wet, yuck! But what can you do?? Close your eyes and go to sleep!!! Zzz
25-8 Harvey turns 1 year old!
To my surprise, some of our stuff is dryer when we wake up...our body-warmth must have dried things out a bit, great! We leave and bike on. This would be one of the nicest days yet... We ride in between the giant mountains further and further into the Alps. It all looks so wonderful! We cross the border into Austria, then Liechtenstein, I love the villages, the meadows, the high mountains, it's magic. And even more so because the track is flat as flat can be. What a wonderful day!! The sky stays very heavy with clouds but it doesn't rain until 12.30 and we arrive at the campground at 1.30. But in that hour I got wet through, because my raincoat has stopped being rainproof. It is just too worn out I guess.
Also it got really cold. Camping was not an appealing prospect today... We asked for a bed in the hostel...but no they were all full.
We were a bit at a loss here, far away from a town, too wet to carry on... So we found a roof and a seat and decided to have lunch first. That tasted great! Then Jan went off to look for a solution and within 10 mins he was back and had found us a room in a hotel! So great! Just around the corner!! And here we are, in a warm room, things have been dried out, we have a real bed and even a bath! It isn't cheap, but then again, this is what we needed at this time and it surely is appreciated and enjoyed, I can assure you!!
Well only one more day before have to conquer the mountain pass!!! It looks a hell of a thing!!!
Luckily the weather forecast is hopeful, less rain and a bit warmer. We will see how we will tackle the next bit.
I am thankful for you all reading (not riding) along with us!!
I hope you are all well in your lives in the meantime.
Lots of happy greetings from the Alps!
Xxx Marleen
Jan in het nederlands naar Liechtenstein,
Heel fijn hoe jullie allemaal meelezen en reageren. Bedankt!
Zo gaan we steeds vele grenzen over.

Paul N Betty :
Hi Marleen & Jan
You are both doing so well !! Have strong memories of those wonderful snowy mountains from 1971 when we drove (!!] through them in our clapped-out rusty, almost brakeless Bedford Dormobile.
Had a great pot-luck at Janneke’s last night for Harvey’s birthday. Enjoyed tour of the house (our first time there). Seemed a bit of a Bowater overload, with Kate, Mike and Craig families all there, but was fun and we all had a good catchup, esp while kids were engrossed with a movie.
You haven’t mentioned sore bums yet, so everything must be going well in that department!
Derek just had a stent (flexible tube) inserted into his oesophagus to enable him to swallow ok again. He’s due home so will see how he’s coping. Pam is her usual laughy self on the surface, but...........!
Sunday morning lie-in, but must get going before the showers arrive AGAIN!
Big hugs, P -

Now for the fun bits........the Splugen Pass. I’m loving the blog and it looks like you are both enjoying the ride. Getting stronger and ready for the business end of the trip. Glad that you sorted the steering though as it has been on my mind. Take care - stay safe. -

Knuffel, Els
